Adaptable Content Authoring Tool

About

This tool helps you mark up your content according to the W3C's WAI-Adapt: Symbols Module specification. This will enable people who need symbols to help them understand content to access your content.

WAI-Adapt is working on a range of techniques to help you make your content more accessible. For general information, please check out the WAI-Adapt Explainer.

Please note that this is a proof-of-concept tool that shows how such an editor can work. You're welcome to use it to mark up your content, but be aware that work on developing guidance on marking up your content is ongoing, and the specification is not yet final.

How to use it

Paste in some HTML, e.g. from your CMS.
Press the "Preview symbols + Create mark-up" button. The content preview will be populated based on the editor's best guess (not perfect) for symbols for certain words.

This tool uses Bliss symbols to illustrate the content. The purpose of assistive technologies built upon WAI-Adapt is to present symbols to the user using their chosen symbol set. The selection and rendering of symbols for the user will be done automatically by the user's assistive technology.
Expand the "Symbol refinement" section to be presented with the option of changing the suggested/prescribed symbols, or dropping some symbols from the finished mark-up. Each symbol can be in one of four states:

default

The default suggested concept (or concept already prescribed by an adapt-symbol attribute in the mark-up) is being used.

edited

You've chosen a different concept.

avoid

You've asked for no symbol to be attached to this word.

none

No concept has been suggested, nor or is being used, for this word. Some words, especially names, may not need symbols.
There are some additional tools at the end of the "Symbol Refinement" section. They can be used to reset all symbols to their default suggestions, and to disable colour.
When you've finished editing the symbols, you can copy out the final HTML with mark-up into your CMS.
You can always paste back in the code from before, to further refine the content.
